Dado and cladding is vertical work, which means every error is at eye level. A course that starts a few millimetres out of level will be badly out by the top of the wall, and the corner joint is where anyone looking closely will check first.
We set the first course off a levelled line rather than off the floor, because floors are rarely as flat as they look. From there the coursing is carried up consistently, corners are mitred or trimmed deliberately, and cut pieces are planned into the layout rather than left to the end.
Anyone can lay the material. What separates a finish that holds up from one that does not is the work that happens before it goes on.
The starting line is struck and levelled independently, so an uneven floor is absorbed at the bottom instead of throwing every course above it.
External corners are mitred or trimmed to a deliberate detail so the edge reads clean rather than showing a raw tile body.
Vertical tiling carries its own weight for its whole life. Full-bed fixing is what stops a panel drumming or letting go years down the line.
Where cuts have to fall is decided before the first tile is fixed, so the wall ends on a sensible piece rather than a fragile sliver.
